Why do Spanish speakers seem to speak so fast?

30 June 2026 by Antonio

After teaching Spanish in London for more than ten years, there is one comment I’ve heard hundreds of times.

“OMG, that’s too quick!”

A student said exactly that to me recently after listening to a short audio recording during one of our lessons.

I smiled because I’ve heard the same reaction from complete beginners, banking professionals, insurance executives, lawyers, people learning Spanish for a partner, and even learners who have been studying the language for years.

The interesting part?

The speakers in the recording weren’t talking unusually fast.

Like many English speakers learning Spanish, my student wasn’t hearing speed. They were experiencing what happens when your brain tries to translate every single word.

Once you understand that, everything starts to make much more sense.

Why Spanish seems so fast

One of the questions I’m asked most often is why Spanish speakers seem to speak so fast.

The answer is surprisingly reassuring.

Research has shown that Spanish generally contains more syllables per second than English. However, the overall amount of information communicated is remarkably similar. Spanish simply distributes that information differently.

In other words, your ears hear a rapid flow of sounds, while your brain is still trying to process each individual word.

That’s completely normal.

Your brain is translating instead of listening

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that most learners don’t actually struggle because Spanish is “too fast”.

They struggle because they are translating.

The process usually looks like this:

Spanish word.

Translate into English.

Understand.

Move to the next word.

Meanwhile, the conversation has already moved on.

Fluent speakers don’t translate every word. They recognise familiar patterns and understand ideas rather than individual words.

The good news is that this is a skill you can develop.

Spanish isn’t the only language that does this

It’s easy to think that Spanish speakers race through conversations.

But English speakers do exactly the same.

Think about how often we say:

“What are you doing?”

as

“Whatcha doing?”

Or:

“Did you?”

as

“D’you?”

Every language has connected speech.

Spanish simply sounds unfamiliar because your ears haven’t become accustomed to it yet.

Listen for meaning, not every word

One of the biggest breakthroughs I see in lessons happens when learners stop trying to understand every single word.

Native speakers don’t need to hear every word to understand a conversation.

Neither do you.

Instead of asking yourself:

“What did that word mean?”

try asking:

“What is the speaker trying to tell me?”

That small change in mindset often transforms listening confidence.

Confidence grows through conversation

Another thing I’ve learnt after teaching Spanish for many years is that learners often wait until they feel “ready” before speaking.

They tell me:

“I’ll start speaking when I understand everything.”

Unfortunately, that day never arrives.

Listening improves by listening.

Speaking improves by speaking.

Confidence grows through using the language.

You don’t need perfect Spanish to have meaningful conversations.

You simply need the confidence to start.

Why personalised lessons make a difference

Every learner is different.

Some struggle with pronunciation.

Others find listening difficult.

Some simply need someone to slow things down and explain why native speakers sound different from classroom recordings.

That’s where personalised one-to-one lessons can make a real difference.

Whether you’re learning Spanish for work, travel, a Spanish-speaking partner or simply because you’ve always wanted to learn, lessons can focus on the situations that matter most to you.

Frequently asked questions

Do Spanish speakers really speak faster than English speakers?

Not necessarily. Spanish often contains more syllables per second, but the overall amount of information communicated is surprisingly similar.

Will I eventually understand native Spanish speakers?

Yes. With regular listening and conversation practice, your brain gradually stops translating every word and begins recognising patterns naturally.

Is watching Spanish television a good way to improve?

Yes, although it can feel challenging at first. Films, television programmes and podcasts expose you to natural speech and help train your ear over time.

Should I slow Spanish audio down?

Sometimes. Slower audio is useful when learning, but it’s equally important to listen to natural-speed Spanish so you become familiar with authentic conversations.

Can private Spanish lessons improve my listening skills?

Absolutely. One-to-one lessons allow you to ask questions, practise listening in real time and build confidence at your own pace.
